Congrats on the new business! Time to get to work!
You’ve made the leap! You’ve opened shop, it’s time to celebrate! It’s also time to think about the office supplies, furniture and other things you’re going to need to keep your business running as smoothly as possible.
What are those basic office supplies you need? We’re glad you’ve asked cause we’ve compiled this list to help you get started:
1. Desk Supplies
In keeping it really simple. We’re talking pens, tape, highlighters, paper clips, scissors, a trash can, etc. — things you don’t normally spend time thinking about, but definitely things you will need. Things that make it possible for you to take notes, be creative and go about your normal daily business.
Either for writing or printing, you’re going to need it, and lots of it. Stock up on copy/printer paper, notebooks, and sticky notes.
3. Office Furniture & Storage
Now that you have the basic supplies, where are you going to sit? And what about your files? Where will they be stored? Whether you choose to completely furnish your office or just want a comfortable office chair and desk, you’ll need some office furniture (with storage pieces).
No matter how you slice it, you’re going to need a computer of some sort. Even if you have a tablet or smart phone, having a computer makes business easier. While you’re at it, don’t forget a printer and a wireless router to keep all your devices connected.
5. Organization Supplies
It may have made the list up there with #1, but it doesn’t hurt to say it again: staying organized is essential! Make sure you have a stapler and binder clips handy to keep your documents and papers together. Throw in some folders so you don’t lose all those important papers, and that’s a really good start to a professional set up.
6. Schedule & Planning
Even if you have a calendar on your phone that’s synced with your office calendar, it’s not a bad idea to see things visually. We recommend buying a calendar or planner to keep on your desk for tracking all your appointments, deadlines and to-do lists. The busier you get, the more important time management becomes.
7. Mailing Supplies
No matter what type of business you’re doing, you’re going to need to ship/send something in the mail (ie: invoices, paychecks/payment, promotional offers, etc.) You’ll need something to send it in. Stock up on envelopes – big and small – and postage.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a doctor, an electrician or a music teacher — every office needs some office supplies. Start with this list and keep on growing from there.
